Basic Font Information
=================

Neuton is a clean, dark, somewhat Dutch-inspired serif font which reminds you a little of Times. It has a large height, short extenders, and a compact width for better screen use, and economy of space.

The family will comprise a regular, italic, and cursive, each in five weights and with smallcaps. Two italics — one called "italic", and the other "cursive" — are uncommon, but very useful. Ever tried emphasizing something already emphasized? Beyond that obvious example, there are other uses.

Sometimes a text needs a different flavor or feel. While one roman can work for a variety of texts, the companion italics don't always. In more classical or personal documents, a stiff, sober, modern and down-to-earth italic will never work. And in many essays, some of the fancier italics look ridiculous. Who said a roman needs only one companion?

Neuton is in continuing development and will come to have:
* 5 weights, from Extralight to Extrabold
* Italic and Smallcaps versions
* A cursive variant
* Extended width versions

A wonderful typeface, coming in a variety of weights and styles, even with an additional cursive font, taking its italic relative to the next step.

Yes, yes, exactly! There's been an interesting conversation here. Although it seems I've committed one of the greatest acts of comment procrastination in the history of dA.

Not a problem, you deserve them! :)
Here's some of my "baby steps", I really would love it if you gave me some tips: :)

The quality isn't very good, and maybe it's not a good try at realism, but it's what I got so far....

Yep! I had looked up the meaning of 'Päivänsini'.

> 'Neuton' reminded me of 'neutron' which explains the quarks and science references.

I thought so. I think Isaac Newton references would also be appropriate.

Thank you, thank you! :)

:nod: Designing a font properly takes so much time. I started my own, it's supposed to be geometirc and simple, but it still is so much work. It takes time and

Same here. It takes time to understand the process and most people will never understand at all. That's when they call you geek for using words like Serif or x-height :lol:

Congratulations on the DD man! I'm glad to see some of the words and phrases in the presentation worked well for people. Especially 'Päivänsini' seems to catch attention, which is Finnish for 'morning glory' . Actually 'Neuton' reminded me of 'neutron' which explains the quarks and science references.

I agree fonts are a design tool, however by itself I think it's also a work of art. If that weren't the case there would be no point in type exhibitions. A font is a tool but the individual letters are designs and work of art.

I think that's why fonts aren't really noticed or appreciated by the general public. Before I got into type I never thought about the fact that every font has to be designed letter by letter. For some reason fonts were just around me and I never asked why until I learned more about it myself. It's a greatly undervalued profession.

Hmm... I think I get what you're saying. The looks are supposed to be unobtrusive but support the content. So it's in the nature of a font that it won't be noticed consciously at first glance :nod:

Right! More love for fonts :dance:

Under the SIL Open Font License. :) I do appreciate donations, though. Either on dA, or through the dafont page: [link]

:) Thanks! The play between angles and curves was one of the things I worked a long time on this. It seems to make Neuton look very friendly, while having a subtle attitude.

Technically fonts/typefaces are a design tool, but they require creativity and artistic ability to create :nod:

So when you use a font in a design project, it is supposed to be un-noticed, because the content is more important than how it looks.

However, I agree with you :) Fonts deserve a lot more appreciation than they get nowadays

I guess most people take fonts for granted. I think it's more like "Oh, that looks nice" instead of "That font works so well in this context, who made it?" Fonts are everywhere and they have such a big effect on how a product is seen, but I guess it's more a subsconscious thing and not recognised as art by most - sadly.

Thanks for the compliments! And fav, and llama, and watch ;)
Do you have any of your baby steps on dA? I could give you some tips, if you like :)

How is the font licensed? Free? Donation? For sale?
I like the classy blend of simplification, curvature, and angles--a healthy modern serif.

PT is an excellent font. But it's very different from Neuton. The individual flavors and vibes distinct. So what to use depends on what exact feel is better for the text or project. :)

Amazing work on the typology here. It's actually very simple yet it looks so elegant and eye catchy. This can be used as a benchmark for professional posters that emphasizes more on text layout rather than graphical symbolism.
